PROFILE: WORKOUT GURU
by The Blonde Myth
Personal
Questions
Board Name--
Workout Guru, aka "The Creatine Kid" upon occasion.
Height--
5'6"
Weight
In Season(When BBing)--
I competed last season at 165.5lbs and then again at 172lbs. I
over did the diet and cardio and lost way too much muscle dieting
down from 205lbs. I also found out that half of my AS wasn't real
i.e. fake Winstrol.
Weight
Off Season(When BBing)—
After competing in the Mr. Alabama in August of 2000 at 172lbs, I
spent 4 months bulking to 228lbs and later hit my 230lb goal.
Weight (When Powerlifting)---
I competed in the 198lb class APF and 205lb class NASA
Marital Status--
Married for going on 13 years with a 10 year old daughter and 8-year
old son and love all dearly. Most of all I probably have the
most beautiful and understanding wife on the planet.
Goals in Life--
I have many. First and foremost would be to maintain a healthy
spiritual life. As a former licensed minister this is
important to me. I have a different theology than many
Christians but overall we're all headed in the same direction.
Second, goal would be to remain devoted to my family and be a good
provider. Third, to continue making a living doing what I
love: fitness, health, promotions, training, writing, and etc.
Fourth, I've won national championship in power lifting and perhaps
would like to do the same in bodybuilding by age 40. I'm 34
now. Fifth is to bench 500lbs within the next 2 years.
Hobbies Outside Of The Gym--
Hmmm, it's really my life. Outside of my family, I really
don't have any. I suppose if by hobby you mean other interest that would
be my collection of Mash episodes (I have them all), fine cigars,
and reading.
You own your own supplement store, does
that interfere with your home life?—Correction,
I did own a supplement store. Due to some problems and current
litigation with an ex-partner, I shut it down. I do have a
large e-commerce/webzine site in development but until I'm done with
this lawsuit I can't set it up. It's really a bummer and is
holding me up. Does it interfere with my family life? At
one time my career was everything, then sometimes you get a cold
slap in the face that kinda brings a man around to what is
important in life.
Bodybuilding Questions
You started as a powerlifter, when did
you start and why?-- Well, I did lift
in high school and some after. I got married at 21 and decided
to stay in the family restaurant business. It didn't take long
and by the age of 27 I was a gross 247lbs and at 5'6" that
ain't pretty at a size 40" waist. My health was bad and
with large family history on my Dad’s side of Diabetes I was
headed down a long road. I was diagnosed with hypoglycemia and
told that if I didn't turn things around I would soon be headed the
other direction and facing Type II diabetes. I knew there was
only one way I could pull the weight off and that was get back to my
roots in the gym. A year later I was a slimmer, harder 200lbs.
I've always been a competitive person and competition gives me great
motivation. So, I started training for powerlifting, loving
the fact that I didn't really have to diet. Just stay active
in the gym and I could keep my weight the same, but kept getting
stronger. It didn't take long to discover my love for the
sport and after my first competition I was addicted. I believe
I totaled just over 1100lbs. I loved it though and soon
discovered that I did have a somewhat of the frame and talent to be
successful at it. A year later I won the NASA state
championships and set a new state record in the 205lb squat and
bench press.
How long did you PL for?--Roughly
5 years, but I still consider myself a powerlifter who is taking a
brief hiatus for bodybuilding.
Years Bodybuilding--
Doing nothing but focusing on bodybuilding? I'm going into my 2 full
year after winning the '99 NASA Submaster PL Nationals.
Reason For Switching to Bodybuilding--
It's a new challenge and many close to me thought I couldn't make
the transition...lol. I proved them wrong, if for no other reason
I'll sometimes do something just because others think I can't.
I love a good challenge.
Goal(s) In Bodybuilding--
To win my state open title, and move on to a National Competition.
Any goals LEFT in Powerlifting? Since
your pretty much own your states records--
Not really sure yet, I'm actually considering some strongman events.
It would be a new and unique challenge and many pay money for
winning. Something NPC BB's, or PL's of any organization don't
have. A trophy is nice but the money is better!
Role Model When Growing Up--
In terms of fitness or powerlifting, etc? I really didn't have one as I really
only got serious about this later in life.
Whose Physique(s) You Admire--
I love the look of Franco, he's a short guy with great mass and was
noted for his incredible strength. Over all aesthetics,
probably Frank Zane or Arnold. Simply because I know I could
comfortably carry their mass around. Bodybuilders of today are
physically some of the most miserable men/women on the face of the
earth.
Have You Ever Competed in Powerlifting/Bodybuilding?
Results?-- Geez Powerlifting, I've got
I think either 3 or 4 state titles, state records in both the squat,
BP, and overall total. 2 South Eastern Titles, a National
Championship, and several small meet trophies / titles. Most
recently went to cover the USPF SouthEastern BP Championships,
decided to compete, and placed third with a 400lb first attempt.
I blew my second and third attempts. Just goes to show that no
matter how many times you've done something you still have to put he
training and work in to win!
Bodybuilding I competed in two shows last summer. I won the
Novice and Junior divisions in the 176lb class in my first show and
then 6 weeks later did my State show placing 3rd in the Junior 176lb
class. These where my first experiences with real dieting.
I learned a lot and expect to win my first show this year and push
myself into the open at my state show.
If You Could Change One Thing In Your
Past, What Would It be?-- I
would have devoted more time to my family early on rather than
learning a hard life lesson I had to learn. I would have also
continued my training from high school and never stopped lifting for
the years that I did.
.
Training Questions
Personal Bests(Powerlifting)--
Squat 630lbs, Bench 450lbs, Deadlift 600lbs.
Personal Bests (Bodybuilding)--
My first show.
Who Influenced Your Way Of Training In
Both Powerlifting and Bodybuilding--
Fred Hatfield in Powerlifting and some carry over into Bodybuilding.
Bodybuilding mainly me.... trial and error, but I had a lot of time
in PL before BB so I was very confident in what I was doing.
Where Do You Train--
I train in three gyms. 2 in the Birmingham, AL area and
one in my home town. Depends on where I'm at and what my
schedule is like as to where I'm able to train.
Funniest Things You've Seen Training--
Hmmm, Watched some teenagers playing around in the gym and one took
the rope for rope pull downs and making believe they were nunchucks
nailed one of his friends right between the eyes accidentally.
Almost knocked the kid out and split him open pretty good. Saw
him a few days later and both eyes where black. Kinda of a
sick thing to think is funny but that's what happens when you let
kids on the gym floor and ther’re clowning around.
What Do You Think About When you Train?
If Anything at all?-- Getting bigger,
am I training hard enough?, what is that SOB I'm competing against
doing? I bet he's not quitting, and most often hoping I can simply
survive my set especially on a heavy leg session.
.
Nutrition Questions
Favorite Food--
Most anything Italian,
pasta & pizza especially.
In-season--
Really depends on how far out I'm at. I'll usually go with the
Zone diet 40-30-30 up
until about 3 wks before the competition then I'll start cutting out
the carbs. I'm currently experimenting with Lyle McDonalds CKD
diet.
Off-Season-
Again depends on if I'm must trying to maintain or bulking. If
I'm maintaining I can get by on about 4-5k cals a day w/300 to 400gr
of protein a day. When bulking I'm going all out around 8-10k
cals a day and 400gr protein minimum outside of that I don’t
really count anything I just eat and eat.
Favorite Supplements--
SciTech Nutritions - MyoMax MRP and Scipro protein. Creatine (micronized)
no one brand just the cheapest I can get, L-glutamine, Vitamin C 2gr
a day, a multi Vitamin, Anti oxidant, and Milk Thistle 800 to 1000mg
daily.
Sample Day Eating Right Now--
Today CKD diet-
Breakfast: 6oz
steak and 4oz cheddar cheese
Snack:
protein shake w/MCT oil
Lunch:
tuna salad
Snack:
protein shake w/mct oil
Dinner: Chicken
breast and broccoli
Snack:
protein shake no oil.
**It'll
will pretty much be the equivalent of this until Sat. AM... I'll
carb up all day moderate protein, and no fat.
.
AE/Anabolic Questions
How Did You Find Anabolic Extreme--
I don't even remember.
Years On AE--
I believe right at a year now.
AS Experience(years)--
I've been around them for several years. I've been on test
replacement therapy since I was 28. As far as using for
Anabolic/training purposes about 2 years now.
How many cycles a year do you do?--
As my schedule looks at present it will be roughly 3 to 4, depends
on how it works out. Because I don't have to worry with
regenerating my gonads do to my therapy, I suppose I would say then
that I'm virtually anabolic year round at this point.
What was you last cycle and what did
you use ......no vol needed-- Last
cycle would be my bulking cycle which I primarily used Designer Labs
Rocket Fuel, Nandrolen, and D-bol with great success. In fact
I'm finishing an article on it and my results for submission to Jay.
Whats been your most favorite topic on
AE-- Quite frankly that's a difficult
question. We've had so many great discussions that it would be
very difficult to nail it down to just one.
Questions you hate--
I hate to read questions about dosages, this drug or that, when with
very little research the individual could find the answer. I
hate spoon-feeding info. If a person will take such an
approach about possibly injecting a substance into their bodies,
imagine what their training and nutrition ethics
must be like.
Pet Peeves--People
who interrupt my workouts to ask a question when I have my
headphones on and obviously don't care to be disturbed. I
still say I'm going to get some shirts made up that say, " If
the headphones are on then leave me the hell alone!"
Relationship to the owner Jay Mueller--After
posting for a few months Jay contacted me about possibly writing for
the magazine. I said I would, wrote one article and really
haven't had much time since. Now things are changing and my
time is opening up mores so I expect to do more writing. We've
spoken a couple of times on the phone and through messenger.
I've shared a few ideas with him and hopefully we will be able to
work on some things in the future together. Outside of that
nothing really, I think the man put together a great site that is
second to none and that should the site continue on it's current
tract it will do very well. I do owe him of introducing me to
the folks at PowerMag. I think things are working out great there.
.
FINAL QUESTION
Whats one piece of advice you would
give to a newbie on training, nutrition, or gear?
Training-
Don't buy into the mags. Variety is the key... there is no one
training program that will accomplish everything. Intensity
must be kept high.
Nutrition-
Read "Enter the Zone" by Barry Sears, PhD. Read Dan
Duchaine’s "BodyOpus" and Lyle McDonalds book on the CKD
diet.
Gear-
Think long and hard before starting, study and research for at least
a year to learn the do's and dont's. Learn for yourself
because the gym rat that wants to sell it to you most likely doesn't
know shit.
Let
me add one final thing. I am also creating a non-profit organization
which will be called the Cognitive Institute for Chemical Cosmetic
Enhancement. I intend
on soliciting many in our industry to serve on the board of
directors to assist in the start up of the organization once all
paperwork is complete. The
intentions of this organization will be to serve the public by
educating and fighting for an individuals right to seek guidance and
assistance from a practicing Physician in using anabolic steroids
and some OTC products for aesthetic purposes. I believe that it is
the right of the individual to choose this option over possible
plastic surgery. We
will lobby for legalization of AS, GH, and other products for this
purpose and also lobby to keep existing safe OTC products legal.
This is the simple outline of the organization but there is
much to come. I have
recently engaged a software engineer to assist in the development of
the website which will serve as a newsletter, information center,
and command post. I
hope to create a small bonfire which will erupt into a full fledged
fire storm. I know I'm
opening myself up to much controversy and scrutiny but it's high
time some one did it and it may as well be me.
